What is website maintenance & support?

Website maintenance is the ongoing work that keeps a site secure, up to date, fast and working: software updates, backups, monitoring, fixes and small improvements after launch.

Websites don't stay finished. Plugins release security patches, browsers change, forms stop delivering and content goes out of date. Maintenance turns these into routine tasks instead of emergencies, and means someone notices a problem before your customers do.

Who is it for?

  • WordPress site owners

Core and plugin updates are essential and occasionally break things. Testing them before they go live keeps the site safe.

  • Online stores

Downtime and broken checkouts cost sales directly; monitoring and quick fixes protect revenue.

  • Teams without a developer

You need someone to call for small changes and problems without hiring a full-time developer.

  • Owners of inherited sites

The original developer is gone and nobody knows how the site works. We document it and take over.

What does maintenance involve on each platform?

The work differs a lot depending on what your site runs on.

PlatformMain maintenance work
WordPressCore, theme and plugin updates, security hardening, database clean-up, backups
ShopifyApp reviews and clean-up, theme updates, checkout and order flow checks
WebflowContent support, form and integration checks, design system upkeep
Next.js / customDependency and framework updates, hosting and monitoring, bug fixes

Why test updates on staging?

Most website breakages after an update come from conflicts: a plugin update that doesn't agree with the theme, or a framework upgrade that changes behaviour. Applying updates directly to a live site means customers discover the problem first.

We apply updates to a staging copy, check key pages, forms and checkout, and only then update the live site, with a fresh backup taken just before, so we can roll back immediately if something unexpected happens.

What a typical month looks like

  • Updates

Available updates reviewed, applied on staging, tested and deployed, with a backup taken immediately before.

  • Monitoring

Uptime, security scans, SSL expiry and backup success watched continuously, with alerts to our team.

  • Requests

Your content changes and small fixes handled through one shared board, so nothing gets lost in email.

  • Report

A short summary of what changed, any incidents, and recommendations for the month ahead.

What happens when something goes wrong?

Most problems are caught by monitoring before anyone reports them: a site that stops responding, a certificate about to expire, a form that has quietly stopped sending emails. We investigate, fix or roll back, and tell you what happened and why.

For bigger incidents (a hacked site, a failed hosting provider) the maintenance set-up is what makes recovery fast: tested backups, documented access and a known-good version of the site to restore.

How website maintenance & support works, step by step

Every step has a clear output you can review. Timing is agreed in your quote.

  1. 1

    Onboarding audit

We review the site, hosting, plugins or dependencies, access and backups, and fix anything urgent.

  2. 2

    Documentation

Accounts, integrations and set-up written down so nothing depends on one person's memory.

  3. 3

    Monitoring set-up

Uptime, security and backup monitoring with alerts to our team.

  4. 4

    Monthly routine

Updates on staging, testing, deployment and backup checks.

  5. 5

    Requests and fixes

Your change requests and any issues handled through one channel.

  6. 6

    Monthly report

What was updated, what was fixed and what we recommend next.

Tools, and what shapes your quote

Pricing is based on your project and agreed in your quote. These are the things that move it.

Website Maintenance & Support pricing factors
FactorWhy it matters
PlatformPlugin-heavy WordPress sites need more update work than static or hosted sites.
Site size and complexityStores, member areas and integrations need more testing each month.
Backup frequencyDaily backups and longer retention cost more than weekly ones.
Included change hoursHow much content or design work you want included each month.
Response expectationsFaster response commitments require more availability.

Common mistakes to avoid

What we see go wrong most often, and how a good project avoids it.

  • Skipping updates because things work

Outdated software is the most common route for attacks. Working today isn't the same as safe.

  • Backups nobody has tested

A backup that fails to restore is discovered at the worst moment. Restore tests prove they work.

  • Access spread across ex-employees

Accounts tied to people who left are a security risk and a lock-out waiting to happen.

  • No one watching forms

Contact forms silently stop sending email more often than people think, and leads are lost without anyone noticing.

Frequently asked questions

Can you maintain a site you didn't build?

Yes. We start with an onboarding audit, fix anything urgent and document the set-up before taking it over.

What if an update breaks something?

We test updates on staging first. If something still goes wrong on the live site, we restore the backup taken just before the update and fix the conflict.

Are content changes included?

Small changes can be included each month, text, images, new pages from existing templates. Larger changes are quoted separately.

How quickly do you respond to problems?

Response commitments are agreed in your plan. Site-down and security issues are always handled first.

Do you also host the website?

We set up and manage hosting under your account rather than reselling it, so you always own the infrastructure.

Is maintenance a long-term contract?

Plans run monthly. You can change or cancel with notice, and everything (accounts, code, backups) stays yours.

Do you include security monitoring?

Yes. We scan for malware and vulnerabilities, monitor logins and keep the site hardened. If a site is already infected, see website security.

What isn't included in maintenance?

New features, redesigns and larger content projects are quoted separately. Maintenance keeps what you have healthy and handles small changes; anything bigger becomes its own small project.

Do you keep a record of changes?

Yes. Code changes are tracked in version control and every update, fix and incident appears in the monthly report, so you always know what was done to your site and when.

Can you train our team to make simple changes themselves?

Yes. Many clients prefer to handle text and images themselves; we show them how and remain available for anything technical.

What happens to my site if we stop working together?

Nothing changes for the site. Your accounts, hosting, code and backups stay with you, and we hand over the documentation so another developer can continue.

Do you monitor search performance as part of maintenance?

We watch Search Console for crawl errors, indexing problems and security warnings and fix technical issues we find. Growing rankings through content and links is a separate SEO service.

Hand over the upkeep.
