What is e-commerce development?
E-commerce development is the design and build of an online store: the catalogue, product pages, cart and checkout, plus the payment, shipping, tax and inventory systems behind them.
A store that looks nice but doesn't convert is an expensive brochure. We build stores around the path from product page to completed order, clear product information, honest delivery costs, a short checkout and the payment methods your customers expect. For growth strategy and marketing, see e-commerce brands.
Who is it for?
Brands launching a first store
You sell in person, on marketplaces or through social media and want your own store with your own customer data.
Stores outgrowing their set-up
Slow pages, a clumsy checkout or a theme you can't change are holding sales back.
B2B and wholesale sellers
You need customer-specific prices, minimum orders, quotes or invoices alongside a normal storefront.
Sellers in several countries
Multiple currencies, languages, tax rules and shipping zones need to work as one store.
Marketplaces
Several vendors sell through one site and need their own dashboards, payouts and order handling.
Digital product sellers
Courses, templates, licences or downloads delivered automatically after payment.

Which e-commerce platform is right for you?
We build on all of them; here is how we help clients choose.
| Platform | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify / Shopify Plus | Launching quickly with reliable hosting and checkout | Monthly fees and app costs; checkout customisation limited outside Plus |
| WooCommerce | Content-heavy stores on WordPress that want full control | You manage hosting, updates and security |
| Headless (Next.js + Shopify or Medusa) | Maximum speed and fully custom experiences | Higher build cost; two systems to maintain |
| BigCommerce | Growing catalogues that want fewer app dependencies | Smaller app ecosystem than Shopify |
| Magento / Adobe Commerce | Large catalogues with complex B2B rules | Heavier hosting and development |
What makes a store convert?
Most of a store's conversion happens on two templates: the product page and the checkout. Product pages need enough information to remove doubt, photos from several angles, sizes and materials, delivery times, returns, and reviews. Every unanswered question becomes a reason to leave or a support email.
Checkout needs to be short and predictable. Guest checkout, express payment buttons, clear delivery costs shown early and a visible returns policy all reduce the number of people who give up at the last step.
Behind the scenes, operations matter as much as design. Stock levels, order notifications, shipping labels and refunds should work without manual juggling, because a store that is painful to run gets neglected.
What should you prepare before an e-commerce project?
- A product list with names, prices, variants and stock levels
- Product photos: ideally consistent backgrounds and angles
- Shipping zones, carriers and rates you want to offer
- Return and refund policy
- Payment providers you already use or prefer
- Business and tax registration details for each selling country
How e-commerce development works, step by step
Every step has a clear output you can review. Timing is agreed in your quote.

- 2
Platform and structure
We recommend a platform and plan collections, filters, product templates and URLs.
- 3
Design
Home, collection, product, cart and checkout designs in Figma for your approval.
- 4
Build and configure
Theme or storefront development, apps and integrations, payments, shipping and tax.
- 5
Catalogue and testing
Products imported, test orders placed with every payment method and shipping zone.
- 6
Launch
Domain, analytics and redirects from any old store, then support as agreed.
Tools, and what shapes your quote
Pricing is based on your project and agreed in your quote. These are the things that move it.
| Factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Catalogue size and variants | Hundreds of products with sizes, colours and bundles need more structure and import work. |
| Platform choice | Hosted platforms are faster to set up; headless and custom builds cost more and offer more. |
| Custom features | Product configurators, subscriptions or B2B pricing go beyond standard themes. |
| Integrations | ERP, inventory, accounting or fulfilment connections need mapping and testing. |
| Markets and languages | Each currency, language and tax zone adds configuration. |
| Migration | Moving products, customers and order history from another platform takes careful work. |
| Design | A custom theme costs more than adapting an existing one. |
| Area | Tools |
|---|---|
| Platforms | Shopify, Shopify Plus, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Medusa, Magento |
| Storefront | Liquid, Next.js, Shopify Hydrogen |
| Payments | Stripe, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Klarna |
| Marketing | Klaviyo, Mailchimp, Google Merchant Center, Meta catalogue |
| Analytics | GA4 e-commerce, Google Tag Manager |
Common mistakes to avoid
What we see go wrong most often, and how a good project avoids it.
Hidden delivery costs
Shipping prices revealed only at the last step are a classic reason shoppers abandon carts. Show them early.
Forcing account creation
Requiring an account before checkout loses first-time buyers. Offer guest checkout.
Thin product pages
One photo and a sentence can't answer a buyer's questions. Sizes, materials, delivery and returns belong on the page.
App overload
Each Shopify app or WooCommerce plugin adds scripts. Too many slow the store and conflict with each other.
No redirects when replatforming
Old product URLs carry rankings and backlinks; lose them and organic sales drop.
Frequently asked questions
Shopify or WooCommerce?
Choose Shopify if you want to launch without managing hosting or security. Choose WooCommerce if you already run WordPress, publish a lot of content or want full control of the code. Our Shopify vs WooCommerce comparison covers the details.
Can you migrate my existing store?
Yes. We migrate products, customers and order history between platforms and set up redirects so you keep your search rankings.
Can I sell in several currencies and languages?
Yes. We set up multi-currency pricing, local payment methods, translated storefronts and hreflang so each market sees its own version.
Do you add products for us?
We can import your catalogue from a spreadsheet or another platform, or add products manually as part of the project.
Can you connect the store to our inventory or accounting system?
Yes, through native integrations where they exist or custom API work where they don't.
Who owns the store and customer data?
You do. The store, payment accounts and customer data are registered to your business.
Do you help with marketing after launch?
Yes, email flows, Google Shopping, Meta catalogue ads, SEO and conversion testing, handled by the same team that built the store.
Do I need product photography before we start?
Not to start, but before launch. Consistent, well-lit photos have a large effect on sales. We can edit and standardise the photos you have through product photo editing.
Should I sell on marketplaces as well as my own store?
Often, yes. Marketplaces such as Amazon or Etsy bring buyers who are already searching, while your own store keeps the customer relationship and higher margins. We can connect your store's catalogue to marketplaces and Google Shopping so stock and prices stay in sync.
