Definition
What is website development?
Website development is the work of planning, designing, building and launching a website, the structure and content, the code, and the hosting and search set-up that make it fast, findable and easy to update.
For most businesses the website is the first place a customer checks before they call, book or buy. It has to answer their questions quickly, look trustworthy on a phone, and give search engines and AI assistants clear facts to work with. We plan the site around the decisions your visitors are trying to make, then design and build it from scratch for your brand.
Who is it for?
New businesses
You need a credible first website that explains what you do, shows up in search and turns visitors into enquiries, without paying for features you won't use yet.
Companies with an outdated site
Your current site is slow, hard to edit or embarrassing on mobile. We rebuild it and keep the URLs and rankings you have already earned.
Service businesses that run on enquiries
Clinics, law firms, contractors and consultants whose sales start with a form, call or booking. Every page is designed to lead to that next step.
Businesses with more than one market
You serve customers in several languages or countries. We build proper language versions with their own URLs and search set-up.
Marketing teams
You publish often and don't want to wait for a developer. You get a structured CMS with reusable sections that keep the design consistent.
Teams leaving page builders
Your site has outgrown a template or drag-and-drop builder. We move you to a faster, cleaner foundation with room to grow.

Which kind of website do you need?
Most business sites fall into one of these types. Knowing yours makes the brief, and the quote, much more precise.
| Type | Main job | Typical pages |
|---|---|---|
| Company / brochure site | Explain who you are and build trust | Home, about, services, team, contact |
| Lead-generation site | Turn visitors into enquiries or bookings | Service pages, case studies, booking, forms |
| Content-led site | Win search traffic with useful articles | Blog, guides, categories, newsletter sign-up |
| Online store | Sell products directly | Catalogue, product pages, cart, checkout |
| Web application | Let users log in and get work done | Dashboard, accounts, settings, billing |
Next.js or WordPress?
We build on both. The right choice depends on how you'll use the site after launch.
| Next.js | WordPress | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Speed, custom features, apps and multi-language sites | Content-heavy sites edited daily by non-technical teams |
| Editing | Headless CMS such as Sanity | The familiar WordPress editor |
| Maintenance | Few moving parts; no plugin updates | Core, theme and plugin updates every month |
| Extending later | Grows into a web app on the same code | Huge plugin ecosystem, with care over quality |
How website development works, step by step
Every step has a clear output you can review. Timing is agreed in your quote.
- 1
Discovery
We learn what the site must achieve, who visits it and what they need to decide. You receive a written scope and fixed quote.
- 2
Structure & content plan
A sitemap and page outlines, so content and design are planned together instead of forcing copy into a finished layout.
- 3
Design
Key pages designed in Figma for mobile and desktop. You review and approve them before any code is written.
- 4
Build
We develop the site, connect the CMS, forms and analytics, and share progress updates every 2–3 days.
- 5
SEO & testing
Metadata, structured data, redirects, speed and accessibility checks across browsers and devices.
- 6
Launch & handover
We go live, submit the sitemap to Google, hand over every account and support you as agreed.
Tools, and what shapes your quote
Pricing is based on your project and agreed in your quote. These are the things that move it.
| Factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Number of unique page layouts | Ten pages built from three templates cost less than ten pages that each need their own design. |
| Who writes the content | Copywriting, translation and image sourcing add work if they aren't ready when the project starts. |
| Custom functionality | Booking, calculators, member areas or search add development time beyond standard pages. |
| Integrations | Connecting a CRM, booking tool or payment provider adds set-up and testing. |
| Languages | Each extra language needs translated content, its own URLs and its own SEO set-up. |
| Design ambition | Rich animation and bespoke illustrations take longer than a clean, conventional layout. |
| Migrating an existing site | Moving content and mapping redirects protects your rankings but is real work. |
| Area | Tools |
|---|---|
| Frameworks | Next.js, React, WordPress |
| Content management | Sanity, WordPress, custom admin panels |
| Styling & design | Figma, TailwindCSS, TypeScript |
| Hosting & delivery | Vercel, AWS, Cloudflare |
| Search & analytics | Google Search Console, GA4, structured data (schema.org) |
| Forms & integrations | HubSpot, Mailchimp, Calendly, Stripe |
Common mistakes to avoid
What we see go wrong most often, and how a good project avoids it.
Designing before the content exists
Layouts built around placeholder text break when real copy arrives. Plan the content outline first, even if final wording comes later.
Choosing a platform out of habit
WordPress, Next.js and Webflow each fit different teams. Pick based on who will edit the site and what it must do in two years.
Leaving SEO until after launch
Changing URLs without redirects can wipe out years of rankings overnight. Redirects and metadata belong in the build, not the clean-up.
Piling on plugins and scripts
Every chat widget, tracker and plugin slows the site down. Each one should earn its place.
Not owning your accounts
Your domain, hosting and analytics should be registered to your business, not to whoever built the site.
Frequently asked questions
Can I edit the website myself?
Yes. We integrate a CMS (WordPress, Sanity or a custom admin) and set it up with reusable sections, so you can change text, images and pages without breaking the design.
Do you write the content?
We can. Copywriting and translation are available as part of the project, or we work with the content you provide and adapt it to the layout.
Is SEO included?
Technical SEO is included in every build: metadata, structured data, sitemap, redirects, speed work and structure that AI assistants can quote. Ongoing SEO, content and link building, is a separate monthly service.
Do you handle hosting and the domain?
We set up hosting on Vercel, AWS or a provider you prefer, under your own account, and connect your domain. You keep full control of both.
Can you build a multi-language website?
Yes. Each language gets its own URLs, translated metadata and hreflang tags so it can rank in its own market.
Do you redesign existing websites?
Yes. Redesigns are a large part of our work, including platform changes, content migration and redirects that protect your rankings.
What do you need from me to start?
A short description of your business, the goal of the site, examples you like and any content you already have. If you have none of these yet, the free consultation covers it.
Who owns the website when it's finished?
Your business does. The domain, hosting account, analytics and CMS are registered to you, and the source code sits in a repository you control, so you can change developers at any time without starting over.
