What is video editing?

Video editing is the post-production process of selecting, arranging and refining recorded footage (together with sound, music, graphics and colour) to produce a finished video that communicates clearly and holds attention.

Good footage can be ruined by a slow, confusing edit, and ordinary footage can become compelling with a sharp one. Editing decides what the viewer sees first, what gets cut, how long each moment lasts and how sound and visuals work together. We edit with a clear purpose for every video (keep watching, understand, trust, buy) and adapt the style to the platform it will live on.

How an edit moves from footage to final

  1. Footage in

Upload via shared drive; we check files and formats

  2. Rough cut

    Story, pacing and structure first

  3. Polish

    Colour, sound, graphics and captions

  4. Review

Time-coded comments on a private link

  5. Deliver

Exports for every platform and aspect ratio

Footage is organised and reviewed, a rough cut sets the story, the fine cut adds polish, and colour, sound and graphics finish the video before export.

What makes an edit good?

A good edit is mostly invisible. Viewers don't notice cuts; they notice that the video felt clear, moved at the right speed and ended before they got bored. That comes from decisions: choosing the strongest takes, cutting anything that doesn't serve the point, and letting important moments breathe.

Sound matters as much as picture. Uneven levels, background hum or music that drowns the voice make even beautiful footage feel amateur. We clean and balance audio on every edit, and choose music that supports the mood without competing with speech.

Finally, a good edit fits its platform. A YouTube video can build its story over minutes; a Reel must make its point within seconds. We cut each version for where it will be watched rather than simply resizing one edit.

How to send footage

A few habits make editing faster and better.

  • Upload original files, not compressed copies from messaging apps
  • Use a shared folder in Google Drive, Dropbox or Frame.io
  • Name or note the takes you prefer
  • Include logos, fonts and brand colours
  • Share two or three reference videos you like
  • Tell us where the video will be published

How video editing works, step by step

Every step has a clear output you can review. Timing is agreed in your quote.

Tools, and what shapes your quote

Pricing is based on your project and agreed in your quote. These are the things that move it.

Video Editing pricing factors
FactorWhy it matters
Finished lengthLonger videos take more time to edit and review.
Amount of raw footageHours of footage take longer to review and select from.
Style and complexityHeavy graphics, effects and animation add time.
Number of versionsExtra formats, lengths and languages add work.
Audio conditionPoorly recorded sound needs more repair.
Stock and musicLicensed stock footage and premium music may add cost.

Common mistakes to avoid

What we see go wrong most often, and how a good project avoids it.

  • Sending compressed files

Footage forwarded through messaging apps loses quality that can't be recovered.

  • No clear goal

Without knowing what the video should achieve, edits drift. Agree the purpose first.

  • Too long

Most videos improve when cut shorter. Respect the viewer's time.

  • Ignoring audio

Viewers forgive imperfect pictures sooner than bad sound.

  • One edit for every platform

Resizing a landscape edit to vertical rarely works. Cut each version properly.

Frequently asked questions

How do revisions work on an edit?

Two rounds are included. You leave comments pinned to exact moments on a private review link, we update the edit, and you check the new version the same way.

How do I send you footage?

Upload original files to a shared Google Drive, Dropbox or Frame.io folder. Avoid sending through messaging apps, which compress video.

Do you provide music?

Yes. We use music and sound effects licensed for commercial use from stock libraries, or tracks you've already licensed.

Can you add subtitles in other languages?

Yes. We create captions and translated subtitles, burned in or as separate files. See subtitles and captions.

Do you film as well?

We focus on post-production. You or your videographer provide footage; we can advise on how to film so the edit turns out better.

Can you match our existing style?

Yes. Share previous videos and brand guidelines, and we'll keep fonts, colours, graphics and pacing consistent.

Do I get the project files?

On request, yes. Final videos are always yours; project files can be handed over so another editor can continue.

Can you edit regularly for us?

Yes. Many clients send videos weekly or monthly, and we keep the same editor and templates for consistency.

Which formats do you deliver?

MP4 by default, MOV or WebM on request, in the aspect ratios each platform needs.

Can you work with phone footage?

Yes. Modern phones record good video; we correct colour and sound, and stabilise shaky shots where possible.

Do you use AI in editing?

We use AI-assisted tools for tasks like transcription, rough selects and noise reduction. The creative decisions and final edit are made by people.

Can you fix shaky or badly lit footage?

Often, yes, within limits. Stabilisation smooths moderate shake, and colour correction can rescue under- or over-exposed shots. Severely blurred or very dark footage can only be improved so far, so we'll tell you what's realistic after seeing it.

Can you cut one long video into several versions?

Yes. A long video can become a full edit, a short summary, vertical clips and a trailer, each cut for its own platform rather than simply shortened.
