What is proofreading & editing?

Proofreading is a final check for errors in spelling, grammar, punctuation and consistency. Editing improves the text itself: clarity, structure, tone and readability.

Readers notice errors before they notice ideas. A typo on a pricing page, an inconsistent product name or a sentence that has to be read twice costs trust. Most writers can't see their own mistakes because they read what they meant to write. A second, careful reader catches what the author misses.

Editing text written in a second language

Many of the documents we edit were written by people working in their second or third language. The content is usually strong; the phrasing gives it away. We make the text read naturally to native readers while keeping the author's meaning and technical precision.

We are especially familiar with the patterns of Albanian and German speakers writing in English, and with English speakers writing in German, which helps us fix what generic tools miss.

Consistency is half the job

Long documents and websites drift: a product name spelled three ways, dates in two formats, British and American spelling mixed. We keep a style sheet of every decision as we go, so the whole text follows the same rules and future writing can match it.

Proofreading after layout

Errors also appear when text is laid out: broken hyphenation, missing lines, wrong captions, page references that no longer match. For brochures, reports and books we do a final proofread of the designed PDF and mark corrections directly on the pages.

Before you send a document for editing

  • Tell us the audience and purpose
  • Share any style guide or preferred spelling
  • Say which level of editing you want
  • Mark sections that are already approved
  • Note terms that must not change
  • Send the final version, not a moving draft

Editing for the web

Web pages are read differently from documents. People scan headings, read the first lines of paragraphs and look for the answer to one question. When we edit website copy, we also check that headings say what the section contains, that paragraphs are short, that links describe where they go, and that key information isn't hidden at the end.

We also look at the details that affect search and accessibility, such as page titles, meta descriptions and image alt text, if you'd like them included.

Editing in German and Albanian

German has its own traps: compound words, capitalisation, formal and informal address, and long sentences that become hard to follow. Albanian text often mixes standard and regional forms, or borrows terms inconsistently. Our editors work in these languages daily and follow the reference works native readers expect.

Tools, and what shapes your quote

Pricing is based on your project and agreed in your quote. These are the things that move it.

Proofreading & Editing pricing factors
FactorWhy it matters
Word countLonger texts take longer to read carefully.
Level of editingSubstantive editing takes far more time than proofreading.
Starting qualityRough drafts need more work than polished ones.
Technical or specialist contentSpecialist terminology needs extra care and checks.
FormatEditing inside a CMS or a laid-out PDF takes longer than a Word file.

Common mistakes to avoid

What we see go wrong most often, and how a good project avoids it.

  • Proofreading too early

Proofreading a draft that will still change wastes the work. Edit first, proofread last.

  • Relying only on spell-checkers

They miss wrong words spelled correctly, inconsistencies and unclear sentences.

  • No style decisions

Without agreed choices, every writer and editor picks differently.

  • Editing in several copies

Parallel versions create conflicts. Work in one file with tracked changes.

Frequently asked questions

Which languages do you edit?

English, Albanian and German. For English, tell us whether you want British or American spelling.

What's the difference between proofreading and editing?

Proofreading fixes errors in a final text. Editing improves clarity, style and structure. Most documents benefit from editing first and proofreading last.

Will you change my meaning?

No. We clarify how something is said, not what you say. Any suggestion that could affect meaning is left as a comment for you to decide.

Can you edit directly in our website?

Yes, if you give us editor access to your CMS, or we can edit an export and you paste the changes.

Do you edit academic work?

We can proofread published or professional academic writing. We don't edit work you will submit for assessment if that breaks your institution's rules.

Can you check a translation?

Yes. We review translations into English, Albanian or German for accuracy and natural phrasing.

Do you use AI?

We use specialist checking tools to catch mechanical issues. The editing itself is done by a person reading the whole text.

How is editing priced?

It is quoted on word count, the level of editing and the format, usually after seeing a sample of the text.

Can you edit a whole website?

Yes. We can work page by page in your CMS or on an export, and keep a style sheet so every page follows the same rules.

Do you check facts?

If agreed, we check names, dates, figures and links against sources you provide or public references, and flag anything we can't verify.

Can you edit very technical documents?

Yes, especially software and business topics. For highly specialised fields we may ask a subject expert on your side to confirm terminology.

Can you work to our brand style guide?

Yes. Send your style guide and we follow it, noting any situations it doesn't cover so you can decide.

How do I see what you changed?

Every change is tracked in the document, and larger suggestions come as comments, so you can accept or reject each one.
