Definition
What is Figma design & design systems?
Figma is a collaborative, browser-based design tool used to design user interfaces, build component libraries and prototypes, and hand designs over to developers. Figma design work covers creating and organising those files.
Most teams use Figma, but few files are pleasant to work in. Detached components, inconsistent spacing, unnamed layers and dozens of near-identical colours make every change slow and every handoff error-prone. We design new work properly from the start, and we untangle existing files so designers, marketers and developers can find what they need and trust it.
Who is it for?
Product teams
A component library that keeps every screen consistent.
Marketing teams
Templates for landing pages, social and ads that anyone can adapt.
Developers
Files with clear specs, tokens and states that match the code.
Teams with messy files
Years of detached components and duplicate styles cleaned up.

What a well-built Figma file has
- Clear page structure: cover, foundations, components, screens
- Components built with variants and properties, not copies
- Variables for every colour, spacing and type value
- Auto layout so designs resize properly
- Named layers and frames
- Every state designed: hover, focus, disabled, error, empty
- Status labels showing what's ready for development
Variables and design tokens
Figma variables store design decisions (colours, spacing, radii, typography values) as named tokens such as “surface/primary” or “space/16”. Components use the variables instead of raw values, so changing a brand colour or switching to dark mode updates everything at once.
Tokens can also be exported to code, so developers use the same names and values. That shared vocabulary removes much of the guesswork between design and development.
Cleaning up an existing file
File clean-ups start with an audit: how many colour and text styles exist, how many components are detached or duplicated, which screens are current and which are outdated. We agree the target structure with you before changing anything.
Then we consolidate styles into variables, rebuild key components with variants, relink screens to the library and archive outdated work rather than deleting it. Your team gets a short guide on how to use and extend the result.
Figma features we use
| Feature | What it's for |
|---|---|
| Components and variants | Reusable elements with sizes, states and styles |
| Variables and modes | Tokens, themes and light or dark mode |
| Auto layout | Designs that adapt to content and screen size |
| Prototyping | Clickable flows for testing and presenting |
| Dev Mode | Specs, code snippets and ready-for-dev status |
| Team libraries | Sharing components across files and teams |
Designing responsive layouts in Figma
Websites and apps are used on screens of every size, so designs need to show how layouts adapt. We design key breakpoints (typically mobile, tablet and desktop) and use auto layout and constraints so components stretch, wrap and stack the way they will in code.
Where behaviour isn't obvious from the frames, we add short annotations: what collapses into a menu, which columns stack first, how images crop. Developers spend less time guessing and fewer layouts break in the build.
Keeping files healthy over time
Design files decay as teams grow: quick fixes become detached components, experiments are left beside final screens, and nobody remembers which version is current. A few habits prevent that, a clear page for work in progress, regular archiving, status labels and an owner for the shared library.
We set these conventions up with your team and can return periodically to tidy the library, add new components and retire unused ones.
How Figma design & design systems works, step by step
Every step has a clear output you can review. Timing is agreed in your quote.
- 1
Audit or brief
Existing files reviewed, or goals and scope for new designs agreed.
- 2
Foundations
Variables, type scale, grids and spacing defined.
- 3
Components
Reusable components built with variants and properties.
- 4
Screens
Pages and screens designed from the library.
- 5
Prototype
Key flows linked for review and testing.
- 6
Hand off
Library published, Dev Mode annotated and team briefed.
Tools, and what shapes your quote
Pricing is based on your project and agreed in your quote. These are the things that move it.
| Factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Scope of screens | More screens and breakpoints take more design. |
| Library size | A full component library takes more work than a few components. |
| Theming | Multiple brands or modes add variable structure. |
| State of existing files | Very messy files take longer to clean up. |
| Code alignment | Matching tokens and components to an existing codebase adds work. |
| Area | Tools |
|---|---|
| Design | Figma, FigJam |
| Tokens | Figma variables, Tokens Studio, Style Dictionary |
| Handoff | Figma Dev Mode, Storybook alignment |
| Assets | Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop |
Common mistakes to avoid
What we see go wrong most often, and how a good project avoids it.
Detaching components
Detached copies don't update and drift out of sync.
Hard-coded values
Raw colours and spacing make theme changes slow and error-prone.
No auto layout
Fixed frames break when content or screen size changes.
Unclear status
Developers build outdated screens when files don't mark what's final.
Frequently asked questions
Can you work in our existing Figma workspace?
Yes. We work directly in your organisation's Figma, so files stay in your account from the start.
Can you turn our website into Figma designs?
Yes. We can recreate an existing site or app in Figma as a starting point for a redesign or design system.
Can you convert Figma designs into a website?
Yes, see Figma to website. Our developers build pixel-accurate, responsive sites from Figma files.
Do you create design systems?
Yes. Foundations, components, documentation and usage guidelines in Figma, aligned with code where possible.
Can marketers use the templates without a designer?
Yes. We build templates with locked structure and editable content so non-designers can create on-brand assets.
How do revisions work?
Two rounds of revisions are included for design work. Clean-up projects are reviewed in stages so you can steer the structure.
Do I need a paid Figma plan?
For shared team libraries and Dev Mode, a paid plan is usually needed. We'll tell you what your use requires.
Can you migrate files from Sketch or Adobe XD?
Yes. Imported files usually need components and styles rebuilt, which we handle as part of the migration.
Will the components match our code?
We can align component names, properties and tokens with your codebase, ideally working with your developers.
Can you train our team?
Yes. We run short sessions on using the library, variables and handoff workflow.
Can you build components that match our React library?
Yes. If you already use a component library such as MUI, shadcn/ui or your own, we mirror its components, names and properties in Figma so design and code stay aligned.
Can you document components for developers?
Yes. Each component gets usage notes, properties and states, and can be linked to Storybook or your code documentation.
Can you set up Figma for a new team?
Yes. We create the workspace structure, shared library, file templates and naming conventions so a new design team starts organised.
