Definition
What is audio editing & mixing?
Audio editing is cutting and cleaning recordings. Mixing balances several sources, such as voices, music and effects, into one coherent soundtrack. Mastering prepares the final mix for its destination, with consistent loudness and tone.
Viewers forgive average video far more easily than bad sound. Echo, background noise, uneven voices and music that buries speech make people stop watching, even when the content is excellent. Most recordings can be improved a great deal in editing and mixing, especially when the work is done with the right tools and a trained ear.

Common problems and what can be done
| Problem | What editing can do |
|---|---|
| Background noise | Usually reduced a lot with modern noise reduction |
| Room echo | Often reduced, though heavy echo can't be removed completely |
| Hum and buzz | Usually removed cleanly |
| Clipping | Can be partly repaired; severe distortion stays audible |
| Uneven speaker levels | Balanced so each voice sits at the same level |
| Music too loud under speech | Ducked and EQ'd so speech is clear |
Honest about what's fixable
Modern restoration tools can do remarkable things, but they have limits. Heavily distorted recordings, voices far from the microphone in a large room, or speech buried under loud music can only be improved so far. We test a short section first and tell you what is realistic before editing the whole recording.
When re-recording is possible, it is sometimes cheaper and better than repair. We'll say so when that's the case.
Loudness for each platform
Platforms normalise loudness differently. YouTube, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, audiobook stores and broadcasters each have their own targets and limits. A mix that is too loud gets turned down and may sound squashed; one that is too quiet sounds weak next to other content. We master to the destination, and provide separate versions when the same audio goes to several places.
Mixing and mastering music
For artists, we mix multitrack recordings into a balanced, clear and exciting whole, then master the track for streaming and other release formats. You send stems or a multitrack session and references for the sound you want, and we deliver mixes for your feedback before the final master.
Recording tips that save editing
A few habits at recording time make a big difference: record in a small room with soft furnishings, keep the microphone close and at a steady distance, record a few seconds of silence at the start, avoid recording levels that peak in the red, and record each speaker on a separate track when you can.
What to send us
- The original recordings, not compressed exports
- Separate tracks per speaker where available
- The final video edit, if mixing to picture
- Music and effects files to include
- Where the audio will be published
- Any parts to remove or keep
Editing interviews and courses
Interviews and lessons are rarely recorded perfectly. People restart sentences, pause to think, cough or speak at very different volumes. Careful editing removes the distractions while keeping each speaker's natural rhythm, so the result sounds confident without sounding cut up.
For courses with many lessons, we set a consistent sound for the whole series: the same loudness, tone and noise level, so students don't have to adjust their volume from one lesson to the next.

Tools, and what shapes your quote
Pricing is based on your project and agreed in your quote. These are the things that move it.
| Factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Length of recordings | More audio takes longer to edit and check. |
| Recording quality | Noisy or echoey recordings need more repair. |
| Editing depth | Removing filler words and restructuring takes longer than light trimming. |
| Number of speakers or tracks | More sources mean more balancing. |
| Mixing to picture | Syncing to a video edit adds work. |
| Platforms | Several mastered versions add a little time each. |
| Area | Tools |
|---|---|
| Editing and repair | iZotope RX, Adobe Audition, Pro Tools, Reaper |
| Mixing | FabFilter, Waves, Fairlight in DaVinci Resolve |
| Mastering | iZotope Ozone, loudness meters |
Common mistakes to avoid
What we see go wrong most often, and how a good project avoids it.
Sending compressed files
MP3s from video exports lose detail that repair tools need. Send originals.
Fixing in post instead of at recording
Five minutes of set-up saves hours of repair.
Mastering too loud
Platforms turn loud audio down, and it can end up sounding worse.
One mix for every platform
Different destinations need different loudness targets.
Frequently asked questions
Can you remove background noise?
Usually a great deal. We test a sample first and tell you what's achievable before editing everything.
Can you fix echo in a recording?
Light to moderate echo can be reduced well. Heavy room echo can be improved but not removed completely.
Do you edit audiobooks?
Yes, including editing, mastering and checks against the technical requirements of audiobook platforms.
Can you mix and master my song?
Yes. Send stems or a multitrack session with references, and we deliver mixes for feedback before the final master.
Do you edit podcasts?
Yes. For full podcast production including publishing and artwork, see our podcast production service.
Can you mix audio for our video?
Yes, mixed to picture with dialogue, music and effects balanced for the platform.
Which formats do you deliver?
WAV and MP3 as standard, and other formats on request.
How many revisions are included?
Two rounds of revisions on the edit and mix.
How is audio editing priced?
It is quoted on the length and quality of the recordings, the editing depth and the number of versions you need.
Can you remove filler words?
Yes. We remove filler words, false starts and long pauses as lightly or thoroughly as you prefer, keeping speech natural.
Can you separate voice from music in an old recording?
Modern separation tools can often do this, with results depending on the recording. We test and show you what's possible.
Can you make several speakers sound consistent?
Yes. We balance level and tone so speakers recorded on different microphones sound like they belong in the same conversation.
Can you prepare audio for radio or TV?
Yes. We master to broadcast loudness standards and deliver in the formats broadcasters specify.
