What is product photo editing?
Product photo editing is the retouching and preparation of product images (cleaning, correcting colour, removing backgrounds and standardising size and framing) so they look professional, accurate and consistent across a store.
Product photos do the job a shop assistant does in person. Shoppers can't touch or inspect the product, so images must be clear, accurate and consistent. Inconsistent backgrounds, colour casts and random cropping make a store look unreliable; colours that don't match reality cause returns. We edit for both appeal and accuracy, and set up a consistent style for your whole catalogue.

Colour accuracy reduces returns
When a sweater arrives a different shade from the photo, customers return it. Camera sensors, lighting and screens all shift colour, so accurate product colour needs deliberate work: a colour reference in the shoot where possible, correction against the physical product or a reference sample, and consistent editing across the range.
We can't control every customer's screen, but matching images to the real product removes the biggest source of mismatch.
Marketplace image basics
Requirements change, so we check current rules for each marketplace.
| Marketplace | Typical main image requirements |
|---|---|
| Amazon | Pure white background, product filling most of the frame, no extra text or graphics on the main image |
| eBay | Clear product, no borders or added text, adequate resolution |
| Etsy | More freedom; consistent style and natural settings work well |
| Google Shopping | Clear product image, no promotional overlays or watermarks |
Editing versus misrepresenting
Retouching should remove distractions (dust, creases, stray threads, reflections of the photographer) not change the product itself. Removing a scratch from the sample is fine; hiding a design feature or making a product look larger than it is misleads customers and can breach consumer rules.
We follow that line on every image and ask when we're unsure whether something is a flaw in the sample or part of the product.
Setting up a style guide
Consistency across hundreds of images comes from rules, not luck. Before batch editing, we edit a few sample images with you and document the decisions: background colour, how much of the frame the product fills, alignment, shadow type, file names and sizes.
Every image is then edited against that guide, and new products added later match the existing catalogue.
Apparel editing
Clothing is one of the most demanding categories: fabrics wrinkle, colours shift under studio light, and mannequins distract from the garment. Ghost mannequin editing combines front and inside shots to show the garment's shape as if worn by an invisible body.
We also straighten seams, remove lint and loose threads, and match colours across a range, while keeping fabric texture realistic.
Preparing images for fast pages
Large, uncompressed images slow product pages and can hurt both conversions and search performance. We export images at the sizes your store actually displays, in efficient formats like WebP where supported, with descriptive file names.
For stores with zoom features, we provide high-resolution versions as well, so detail is there when shoppers need it.
Turning raw photos into a complete gallery
A strong product gallery usually includes more than the main image: alternative angles, close-ups of materials and details, the product in use, size references and sometimes an image highlighting key features.
From a single photo session, we can prepare a full gallery set with consistent editing, including simple infographic images that answer common questions before customers ask them.

Common mistakes to avoid
What we see go wrong most often, and how a good project avoids it.
Inconsistent backgrounds
Mixed backgrounds make a store look disorganised.
Over-retouching
Changing the product misleads customers and causes returns.
Ignoring colour accuracy
Inaccurate colour is a common return reason.
Oversized files
Huge images slow product pages. Optimise for web.
Frequently asked questions
Can you remove backgrounds from hundreds of images?
Yes. Batch editing to a style guide keeps large catalogues consistent.
Do you do ghost mannequin editing?
Yes, combining front and inside shots to show apparel shape without a mannequin.
Can you make images Amazon-compliant?
Yes. We edit main images to Amazon's current requirements and create secondary images with features and lifestyle.
Do you use AI?
We use AI-assisted masking and clean-up for speed, and a person checks and refines every image.
Can you add our products into lifestyle scenes?
Yes, with composites using licensed backgrounds or your own location photos, keeping lighting and scale realistic.
What format do you deliver?
JPEG, PNG with transparency, WebP or other formats, in the sizes your store needs.
Can you fix badly lit photos?
Often. Very poor originals can only be improved so far, and reshooting may be better.
Do you photograph products too?
We focus on editing. We can give shooting guidelines that make your photos easier to edit.
How do revisions work?
We agree the style on a sample first; two rounds of revisions are included.
Can you create infographic images?
Yes, feature callouts, size guides and comparison images for product galleries.
Can you edit jewellery photos?
Yes. Jewellery needs careful retouching of reflections, dust and metal tones while keeping gemstones and finishes realistic.
Can you match the style of our existing images?
Yes. Send examples of your current catalogue and we'll edit new images to match.
Can you remove a model's background and keep their hair natural?
Yes. Hair and fine edges need careful masking; we refine them by hand so cut-outs look natural.
Do you name files for our store?
Yes. We follow your SKU or naming convention so images upload to the right products easily.
