What is Shopify development?
Shopify development is building and customising stores on Shopify's hosted commerce platform, themes written in Liquid, configuration of products, payments and shipping, and apps that extend what the store can do.
Shopify takes care of hosting, security and checkout, which is why it's the quickest way to run a professional store. The trade-off is that many stores look and behave the same. We design a theme around your products, keep apps to what earns its place, and set the store up so your team can run it day to day.
Who is it for?
New Shopify brands
You want a store that doesn't look like every other template, set up properly from day one.
Stores on a tired theme
Your theme is slow, cluttered with apps or hard to change. We rebuild it lean.
Brands moving to Shopify
You're leaving WooCommerce, Magento, Wix or a custom platform and need your products, customers and SEO to come with you.
High-volume merchants
Shopify Plus features (checkout extensibility, B2B, expansion stores) need careful set-up.

Do you need Shopify Plus?
| You probably need Plus if… | You probably don't if… |
|---|---|
| You need checkout customisation beyond standard settings | Standard checkout and apps cover your needs |
| You sell B2B with company accounts and price lists | You sell mainly to consumers |
| You run several expansion stores for different markets | Shopify Markets covers your countries in one store |
| You need automation through Shopify Flow at scale | Your order volume is manageable with standard tools |
How do we keep a Shopify store fast?
Speed on Shopify comes down to three things: the theme, the apps and the images. A theme built for your store loads only what your pages use, rather than every feature a multipurpose theme offers.
Apps are the most common cause of slow stores. Many inject scripts on every page, even where they do nothing. We audit installed apps, remove the ones that no longer earn their place, and replace simple app features (badges, size charts, custom fields) with theme code and metafields.
Images are served by Shopify's CDN in modern formats, but they still need the right sizes and lazy loading. We set responsive image sizes per template so a phone never downloads a desktop-sized photo.
Shopify app or custom theme code?
A rule of thumb we use when deciding.
| Feature | Usually best as |
|---|---|
| Reviews, subscriptions, loyalty | An established app |
| Size charts, product badges, extra product fields | Theme code with metafields |
| Upsells and bundles | App or theme code, depending on complexity |
| Integration with an ERP or warehouse | A custom app |
| Pop-ups and announcement bars | Theme sections |

- 6
Launch
Test orders, redirects, analytics and handover to your team.
Tools, and what shapes your quote
Pricing is based on your project and agreed in your quote. These are the things that move it.
| Factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Custom theme vs adapted theme | A theme built from scratch takes longer than customising a well-built existing theme. |
| Number of templates | Different layouts for products, collections, landing pages and blog add design and build. |
| Custom app work | Features no app provides need private app development. |
| Markets | Each additional currency, language and domain needs configuration and testing. |
| Migration | Products, customers, orders and redirects from another platform. |
| Shopify Plus features | Checkout extensions, B2B and Flow automations add set-up work. |
| Area | Tools |
|---|---|
| Theme | Liquid, Shopify CLI, Online Store 2.0, Dawn as a reference |
| Headless | Hydrogen, Next.js, Storefront API |
| Apps & data | Admin API, metafields and metaobjects, Shopify Flow |
| Marketing | Klaviyo, Google & YouTube channel, Meta channel |
| Quality | Theme Check, Lighthouse, GA4 |
Common mistakes to avoid
What we see go wrong most often, and how a good project avoids it.
Installing an app for everything
Many app features can be built into the theme with metafields, avoiding monthly fees and extra scripts.
Editing the live theme directly
Changes should be made on a duplicate or in version control, so a mistake doesn't take the store down.
Ignoring collection structure
Collections and filters drive navigation and SEO. Planning them late leads to messy URLs and confused shoppers.
Forgetting uninstalled app code
Some apps leave code behind in the theme after removal, slowing pages long after they're gone.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a custom theme?
Not always. A well-built theme customised to your brand is enough for many stores. A custom theme pays off when your products, content or brand need layouts no theme offers.
Will my Shopify store be fast?
Speed depends mostly on the theme and the number of apps. We build lean themes, remove apps that add scripts without earning their keep, and optimise images.
Can you move my store to Shopify without losing rankings?
Yes. We migrate products, customers and orders, keep URL handles where possible and set up 301 redirects for everything else.
Can my team edit the store without a developer?
Yes. Online Store 2.0 sections let your team add, reorder and edit content blocks from the theme editor.
Do you build headless Shopify stores?
Yes, with Hydrogen or Next.js on Shopify's Storefront API, when performance or custom experiences justify the extra cost.
What about Shopify's monthly fees?
Shopify plan fees and app subscriptions are paid by you directly to Shopify and app vendors. We'll recommend the plan that fits your volume.
Can you fix problems in a theme another developer built?
Yes. We review the theme code, fix bugs and performance issues, and document what we changed so the next person understands it.
How do you handle Shopify Markets for international selling?
We configure each market's currency, language, domain or subfolder, duties and shipping, translate the storefront and set hreflang so search engines show the right version in each country. Prices can be converted automatically or set manually per market.
Can you integrate Shopify with our warehouse or ERP?
Yes. Where an official connector exists we configure it; otherwise we build a private app that syncs orders, stock and fulfilment through Shopify's Admin API, with error alerts when something fails.
Can you add subscriptions or bundles to my store?
Yes. Subscriptions run through Shopify's subscription APIs with apps such as Recharge or Shopify Subscriptions; bundles can use Shopify's bundle features or a custom theme implementation, depending on how flexible they need to be.
