What is logo design?
A logo is a graphic mark, wordmark or combination that identifies a business. Logo design is the process of creating that mark so it is recognisable, appropriate to the business and works at every size and in every context.
A logo doesn't need to explain everything you do. It needs to be recognisable, memorable and appropriate, and to work everywhere: a favicon, a shop sign, an app icon, an invoice, an embroidered shirt. The best logos are usually simple, which is exactly what makes them hard to design. We explore several genuinely different directions before refining one, and we test it at real sizes and in real contexts.
Who is it for?
New businesses
A professional mark from day one instead of a placeholder.
Businesses that outgrew their logo
A dated or amateur logo refreshed while keeping recognition.
Local shops and restaurants
Logos that work on signs, menus, packaging and social.
Products and apps
Marks that work as app icons and favicons.

Types of logo
| Type | What it is | Works well when |
|---|---|---|
| Wordmark | The name set in distinctive type | The name is short and memorable |
| Lettermark | Initials or a single letter | The name is long |
| Symbol | An icon or abstract mark | You need a strong standalone icon |
| Combination mark | Symbol plus name | Flexibility across many uses |
| Emblem | Name inside a shape or badge | Traditional, crafted or institutional brands |
What makes a logo work
Simplicity helps a logo be recognised at a glance and reproduced cleanly at tiny sizes. Distinctiveness keeps it from being confused with competitors. Appropriateness means it feels right for the audience, a children's brand and a law firm need different tones.
We test every concept in context before you choose: as a favicon, on a phone screen, on a sign, in one colour on a dark background. A concept that looks great large but falls apart small is caught before it's finalised.
Originality and trademarks
Every concept is drawn from scratch; we don't use logo templates or stock icons. We also check that concepts aren't obviously similar to well-known marks in your field.
That check isn't a legal trademark search. If you plan to register your logo, we recommend a professional trademark search in your markets before you commit, and we can prepare files for the application.
Files you should always receive
- Vector files (SVG, EPS or PDF) that scale without losing quality
- PNG files with transparent backgrounds
- Full-colour, black and white versions
- Horizontal and stacked layouts
- A square icon for apps and social profiles
- Colour codes in HEX, RGB and CMYK
Testing a logo before you commit
Before finalising, we place the logo in the situations it will actually live in: a browser tab, a social profile picture, a shop front, a printed invoice, an app icon on a busy home screen, embroidered on a shirt. Problems that are invisible on a large white artboard appear quickly in these tests.
We also check it in one colour, reversed on dark backgrounds and at the smallest size it will ever be used. If a detail disappears or the shape becomes unclear, we simplify before you approve the final version.

Tools, and what shapes your quote
Pricing is based on your project and agreed in your quote. These are the things that move it.
| Factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Number of concepts | More initial directions take more design time. |
| Custom lettering | Drawing custom type costs more than adapting a typeface. |
| Extent of guidelines | A full brand guide costs more than a logo usage page. |
| Additional applications | Business cards, signage and templates add work. |
| Typeface licences | Some commercial fonts need paid licences. |
| Area | Tools |
|---|---|
| Design | Adobe Illustrator, Figma |
| Sketching | paper and Procreate |
| Mock-ups | Photoshop |
| Type | licensed typefaces, custom lettering |
Common mistakes to avoid
What we see go wrong most often, and how a good project avoids it.
Too much detail
Fine details disappear at small sizes. Keep it simple.
Following trends
Trendy effects date quickly. Aim for something lasting.
Designing by committee
Too many opinions dilute the result. Agree who decides.
Only receiving a PNG
Without vector files, the logo can't be printed or scaled properly.
Skipping a trademark search
Check before investing in signage and print.
Frequently asked questions
How many logo concepts do I get?
Several distinct concepts, agreed in the brief. We focus on genuinely different directions rather than small variations.
How do revisions work?
Two rounds of revisions are included on the chosen concept, so you can refine details until it's right.
Do I own the logo?
Yes. Once paid, the logo and all files are yours, with full rights to use and register it.
Can you redesign our existing logo?
Yes. We can modernise it while keeping the elements people recognise, or start fresh if that's better.
Do you do a trademark search?
We check for obvious similarity with well-known marks, but a legal trademark search should be done by a professional before registration.
What file formats will I receive?
SVG, PDF and EPS vectors, plus PNG files with transparent backgrounds, in colour, black and white.
Is a brand identity included?
A short usage guide is included. For full colour palettes, typography, imagery and guidelines, see brand identity design.
Can you design a logo for an app icon?
Yes. We design marks that work in the square app icon format and follow platform guidelines.
Do you use AI to make logos?
No. Logos are designed by people from scratch, which also avoids unclear rights in AI-generated marks.
Can you design business cards too?
Yes, as part of a brand package or separately as graphic design.
What do you need from us?
A completed brief: your business, audience, competitors, logos you like and dislike, and where the logo will be used.
Can you create a simplified icon from our logo?
Yes. A simplified mark for favicons, app icons and social profiles keeps recognition when the full logo would be too detailed.
Do you design logos for sub-brands or products?
Yes, designed to sit alongside your main brand with a clear family resemblance.
Can you animate the logo?
Yes. An animated version for videos, presentations and social media is available as an add-on; see motion graphics.
Should our logo include a slogan?
Usually not in the main logo, because slogans become unreadable at small sizes. We can design a separate lock-up with the slogan for larger uses.
