Definition
What is email template design?
Email template design is creating reusable layouts for emails, coded so they display correctly across email clients, devices and display settings.
Email is unforgiving. Gmail, Outlook, Apple Mail and dozens of other clients render HTML differently, dark mode inverts colours in unpredictable ways, and images are often blocked by default. A template that looks perfect in the editor can break for a large share of subscribers. Good templates are designed for these limits and tested before anyone sends them.

Why email code is different
Web pages can rely on modern CSS. Emails can't: some versions of Outlook use Word's rendering engine, many clients strip styles, and support for layout features varies widely. Reliable email templates use tested patterns, inline styles and fallbacks so the message survives the least capable client your subscribers use.
We test every template across the main desktop, web and mobile clients before handover, and fix issues client by client.
Designing for dark mode
Many people read email in dark mode, and clients handle it differently: some leave colours alone, some invert them partly, some fully. Logos disappear on dark backgrounds, and dark text on transparent images becomes unreadable. We design with this in mind, using logo versions, image backgrounds and colour choices that hold up in both modes.
Typical template set
| Template | Used for |
|---|---|
| Newsletter | Regular editorial content |
| Campaign | Promotions, launches and announcements |
| Welcome and onboarding | First emails after sign-up |
| Abandoned cart or browse | Reminders with dynamic product content |
| Transactional | Receipts, shipping updates, password resets |
Modular, so your team can build fast
Instead of a few fixed templates, we build a set of modules that combine into any email: hero variations, product grids, text blocks, testimonials, buttons and footers. Your team builds a new campaign by stacking modules in the platform's editor, and the result stays on-brand and tested.
Accessible emails
Accessible emails are easier for everyone to read. We use real text instead of text in images, sufficient contrast, readable font sizes, meaningful alt text, a logical reading order and descriptive link text, and we set the language of the email so screen readers pronounce it correctly.
Before the first send
- Templates tested in major clients and dark mode
- Images have alt text and the email works with images off
- Links and tracking parameters checked
- Unsubscribe and footer details correct
- Sender name and preview text written
- SPF, DKIM and DMARC set for your sending domain
Dynamic content and personalisation
Modern email platforms can insert products, names, order details and recommendations into each message. Templates need to handle every case gracefully: long product names, missing images, one product or twelve. We build these blocks with your platform's template language and test them with real data before launch.
For multilingual audiences, we plan layouts with room for longer German or shorter English text and set up language versions in the platform.

Tools, and what shapes your quote
Pricing is based on your project and agreed in your quote. These are the things that move it.
| Factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Number of templates and modules | More layouts and modules take more design and coding. |
| Platform | Some platforms need more work to make modules editable. |
| Dynamic content | Product feeds and personalisation add logic and testing. |
| Languages | Multilingual templates need text space for each language. |
| Testing scope | More clients and devices to support means more testing. |
| Area | Tools |
|---|---|
| Platforms | Klaviyo, Mailchimp, HubSpot, Brevo, Customer.io, Postmark, SendGrid |
| Code | MJML, hand-coded HTML, Liquid and platform template languages |
| Testing | Litmus, Email on Acid, real-device checks |
| Design | Figma |
Common mistakes to avoid
What we see go wrong most often, and how a good project avoids it.
Designing like a web page
Layouts that rely on modern CSS break in several email clients.
Text inside images
It disappears when images are blocked and is unreadable to screen readers.
Ignoring dark mode
Logos and text can vanish when clients invert colours.
No testing before sending
A broken email reaches every subscriber at once.
