Definition
What is website redesign?
A website redesign is the planned replacement of a site's design, structure and often its technology, carried out so that existing traffic, rankings and functionality are kept or improved rather than reset.
Redesigns go wrong in two ways: the new site looks better but converts worse, or it launches and organic traffic falls because URLs changed without redirects. Both are avoidable. We treat the current site as evidence (what visitors use, which pages rank, where they get stuck) and design the new one from that evidence rather than from taste alone.
Who is it for?
Sites that look dated
The design no longer reflects the quality of your business, and visitors judge you by it before they read a word.
Sites that struggle on mobile
Text is tiny, buttons are cramped and forms are painful on a phone, where most visitors now arrive.
Slow or fragile sites
Years of plugins, quick fixes and page-builder layouts have made the site slow and nerve-racking to update.
Sites that don't convert
Traffic arrives but enquiries don't. The structure buries the information visitors need to decide.
After a rebrand
A new name, logo or positioning needs a website that tells the new story consistently.

Refresh, redesign or replatform?
Not every tired website needs a full rebuild. The right scope depends on what's actually wrong.
| Option | What changes | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|
| Refresh | Visual design and styling on the same structure and platform | The site works but looks dated |
| Redesign | Structure, content and design, usually on the same platform | Visitors struggle to find what they need |
| Replatform | Technology underneath, often with a redesign | The platform itself is slow, insecure or impossible to edit |
How do we protect your search rankings?
Before anything changes, we export every URL the current site has, together with the pages that receive organic traffic and the pages other websites link to. These are the assets a redesign must not lose.
Each old URL is then mapped to its most relevant new page. Where pages are merged or removed, the redirect points to the closest equivalent rather than the homepage, because search engines treat blanket homepage redirects as missing pages.
Titles, descriptions, headings and internal links on important pages are carried over or improved, not rewritten blindly. After launch we watch Search Console for crawl errors and ranking changes so anything unexpected is fixed within days rather than discovered months later.
How website redesign works, step by step
Every step has a clear output you can review. Timing is agreed in your quote.
- 1
Audit
Analytics, search data, content inventory and a review of where visitors get stuck.
- 2
Structure and URL map
A new sitemap and a mapping of every old URL to its new home.
- 3
Design
Key templates designed in Figma and approved before development starts.
- 4
Rebuild
Development on the chosen platform, with content migrated and cleaned up.
- 5
Pre-launch checks
Redirect testing, metadata, structured data, speed and accessibility.
- 6
Launch and monitor
Go-live at a quiet time, then close monitoring of rankings, errors and conversions.
Tools, and what shapes your quote
Pricing is based on your project and agreed in your quote. These are the things that move it.
| Factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Size of the current site | More pages mean more content decisions, migration and redirects. |
| Scope of change | A visual refresh costs far less than a new structure on a new platform. |
| Content rewriting | Rewriting copy for clarity and SEO is valuable work and adds to the scope. |
| New functionality | Booking, accounts or integrations added during the redesign are extra development. |
| Platform change | Moving platforms adds migration and testing. |
| Languages | Each language version multiplies content and redirect work. |
| Area | Tools |
|---|---|
| Audit | GA4, Google Search Console, Screaming Frog, Microsoft Clarity |
| Design | Figma |
| Build | Next.js, WordPress, Webflow, Shopify |
| Launch | redirect testing, Lighthouse, uptime monitoring |
Common mistakes to avoid
What we see go wrong most often, and how a good project avoids it.
Redesigning on opinion
Changing what feels old without checking what visitors actually use risks removing the pages that bring in business.
Launching without redirects
Changed URLs without 301 redirects send visitors and search engines to 404 pages, and rankings fall.
Redirecting everything to the homepage
Search engines treat it as a missing page. Each URL needs its closest equivalent.
Throwing away content that ranks
Pages with traffic and backlinks should be improved, not deleted because they look untidy.
No measurement before and after
Without a baseline you can't tell whether the redesign helped. Record key metrics before launch.
Frequently asked questions
Will a redesign hurt my Google rankings?
It doesn't have to. Rankings drop when URLs change without redirects, valuable content is removed or the site becomes slower. Proper mapping, redirects and monitoring keep that risk low.
Can you keep my existing content?
Yes. We review every page and keep, improve, merge or retire it based on its traffic and value. You approve the decisions before migration.
Do I have to change platform?
No. Many redesigns stay on the same platform. We recommend a change only when the current one is holding you back.
How do you decide what the new design should look like?
From the audit, your brand and your goals. We show you key templates in Figma, explain the reasoning and refine them with your feedback.
Can the redesign be done in phases?
Yes. Large sites can be redesigned section by section, or with a new homepage and key templates first, as long as the navigation and design stay consistent along the way.
What should I prepare?
Access to analytics and Search Console, a list of what you dislike about the current site and what you'd keep, and examples of sites you admire.
What happens after the new site launches?
We monitor Search Console and analytics, fix any errors during the agreed support period. Ongoing maintenance is available afterwards.
Can you redesign a site you didn't build?
Yes, most redesigns we do are of sites built by someone else. We start with the audit regardless of who built it.
How do you measure whether the redesign worked?
We record a baseline before launch (organic traffic, conversion rate, enquiries and Core Web Vitals on key pages) and compare the same metrics after launch, allowing time for search engines to settle.
Can you improve conversion as part of the redesign?
Yes. The audit shows where visitors drop off; the new structure, page content and calls to action are designed to remove those obstacles, and we set up tracking to measure enquiries and sales afterwards.
