Definition

What is infographic design?

An infographic is a visual explanation of information, combining charts, diagrams, icons and short text so a reader can understand data, a process or a comparison quickly.

Some information is hard to absorb as text: how a process works, how numbers change over time, how options compare. A good infographic turns it into something people understand at a glance and remember later. A bad one decorates numbers until they mislead. The difference lies in starting from the message and the data, not the decoration.

Who is it for?

  • Content and PR teams

Shareable visuals that earn links and coverage for your research.

  • Analysts and researchers

Report findings presented clearly to non-specialists.

  • Nonprofits

Impact reports and campaigns that explain your work.

  • Educators and trainers

Processes and concepts that stick with learners.

Matching the graphic to the message

You want to showUsually best as

Comparison between itemsBar chart or side-by-side table
A process or sequenceFlow diagram with numbered steps

A single striking figureLarge number with context

Accurate first, attractive second

Charts can mislead without a single wrong number: a truncated axis, a 3D effect that distorts sizes, a pie with too many slices. We keep scales honest, label units, show sources and avoid decoration that changes how the data reads.

We work only with data you provide or public sources you approve, and we don't invent figures to fill a layout. If the data doesn't support the message, we'll say so before designing.

Infographics on the web

A single large image is hard to read on a phone and invisible to search engines and screen readers. For websites we often design infographics as a sequence of sections, or build them in HTML and SVG, so text stays real, the graphic scales and the content can be indexed and quoted by AI assistants.

Where an image is the right format, we provide alt text that summarises the message and an accompanying data table.

Infographics that earn links

Original research presented clearly is one of the more reliable ways to earn coverage and links. We can design a set of visuals around a study or survey, with an embeddable version and social cut-downs, to support outreach.

What to prepare

  • The one message the infographic must deliver
  • Your data, with sources and dates
  • Where it will be published
  • Your brand guidelines
  • Examples you like
  • Any required logos or disclaimers

Process and how-it-works graphics

Not every infographic is about numbers. Explaining how a service works, what happens after someone signs up or how a product is made is often more useful to customers than any chart. These graphics need a clear sequence, consistent icons and short labels that can be understood without reading a paragraph.

We test process graphics by asking someone unfamiliar with the topic to explain it back from the graphic alone. If they can't, the graphic isn't finished.

Annual and impact reports

Reports for boards, donors or investors combine many numbers that need to be read correctly. We design a consistent chart style across the report, highlight the figures that matter, and keep technical detail available in tables for readers who want it.

How infographic design works, step by step

Every step has a clear output you can review. Timing is agreed in your quote.

  1. 1

    Message

Agree the audience, purpose and the single key takeaway.

  2. 2

    Data

Review and simplify the data; confirm sources.

  3. 3

    Wireframe

A rough layout of the story and chart types for approval.

  4. 4

    Design

Full design in your brand style with icons and illustrations.

  5. 5

    Check

Numbers, labels and sources checked against the data.

  6. 6

    Deliver

Web, print and social versions, plus accessible alternatives.

Tools, and what shapes your quote

Pricing is based on your project and agreed in your quote. These are the things that move it.

Infographic Design pricing factors
FactorWhy it matters
Amount of dataMore datasets and charts take longer to analyse and design.
Data preparationMessy or incomplete data needs cleaning first.
Custom illustrationBespoke illustrations add design time.
FormatsEach additional version for social, print or web adds work.
InteractivityInteractive web graphics need development.

Common mistakes to avoid

What we see go wrong most often, and how a good project avoids it.

  • Too many messages

An infographic that tries to say everything says nothing. Choose one takeaway.

  • Decorative distortion

3D effects and unequal scales make data read wrongly.

  • No source

Unsourced numbers aren't trusted or shared.

  • A single giant image on the web

It's unreadable on phones and invisible to search and screen readers.

Frequently asked questions

Can you work with our raw data?

Yes. Send spreadsheets or reports and we'll review, simplify and visualise them, confirming any interpretation with you.

Do you research data for us?

We can collect data from public sources you approve. We don't invent figures.

Can infographics be interactive?

Yes. For websites we can build interactive charts in HTML and SVG.

Are infographics good for SEO?

When the text is real HTML or accompanied by a summary, yes. Original data presented clearly can also earn links.

Can you make social media versions?

Yes. We cut the infographic into posts and carousels sized for each platform.

How do you make infographics accessible?

With good contrast, readable type, alt text that summarises the message and an accompanying data table.

How many revisions are included?

Two rounds at the wireframe stage and two at the design stage.

How is infographic design priced?

It is quoted on the amount of data, the number of graphics and formats, and any custom illustration or interactivity.

Can you design charts for our annual report?

Yes. We create a consistent set of charts and diagrams across the report and prepare them for print and PDF.

Can you turn a process into a diagram?

Yes. Process and how-it-works graphics are some of the most useful infographics we make.

Can we update the infographic ourselves later?

Yes. We provide editable source files, and for charts we can build them so the data can be swapped.

Which chart tools do you use for web graphics?

Datawrapper and Flourish for many charts, and custom SVG or D3 when a graphic needs to match your design closely or be interactive.

Can you visualise survey results?

Yes. We present survey findings clearly, showing sample sizes and question wording where it matters for interpretation.

Do you design for presentations too?

Yes. We can deliver charts and diagrams as editable slides for PowerPoint, Keynote or Google Slides.

Can you design a series of infographics in one style?

Yes. A consistent chart and icon style across a series makes your content recognisable and easier to read.
